Swayamvar - 18th century(Rajsthan)

AUTHOR
A woman calls the maid servants together. "Is Manikarnika ready or not?" one maid said "The princess is getting ready," another replies, "but she has sent for you."
The queen-whose name is Padmavathi-says, "We are going to meet the princess. Tell the Raja that we will bring the princess down as soon as she is ready." With that, she moves toward a fine, well-kept room-the private chamber of the princess, curtained like in the old days, lit by oil lamps.
Padmavathi goes up to the princess and asks, "Manikarnika, what would you like to speak to us about?"
"Maa sa," the princess replies, "we were wondering-may I go once to the Kali Ma temple to pray before the swayamvar?"
Padmavathi answers, "We must ask the Rana, but there is no harm in going to the temple. We'll ask the Rana and come back. You stay in your chamber."
Manikarnika nods.
After a while, Rani-sa returns and says, "manikarnika, Rana-sa has agreed. I will instruct the soldiers to prepare the chariot. You must cover your face." Saying this, she pulls a veil over Manikarnika's face and leads her away.
Just then, Rana-sa Surya Rajvanshi enters-his forehead shining with the radiance of the sun, a sword in his hand. He says, "Manikarnika, today is your swayamvar. Try to return quickly, for all the princes are about to arrive."
Rani Padmavathi replies, "Rana-sa, please go ahead, or else you will be delayed here. We shall follow shortly." With this, she takes Manikarnika with her, and they both sit in the chariot, soldiers surrounding them on all sides.
After some time, they arrive at the temple of Goddess Kali. But there, Vansh Chandravanshi is already performing prayers to the goddess, chanting Sanskrit mantras inside the sanctum.
When the ritual ends, the priest says, "Maharaj, the worship is complete."
Vansh responds, "
"Pandit ji Maa kaali ki pooja hum kuch paane ke liye nahi karte isliye karte hai taaki maa kaali apni kripya hum per banye rakhe "
("Pandit ji, we don't worship Maa Kali to gain something... we do it so that her blessings remain upon us.")
" Saying this, he begins to walk out of the temple-lost in deep thought.
---
As Vansh was leaving the temple, his eyes suddenly fell upon a veiled girl. At that very moment, a gust of wind blew, lifting Manikarnika's veil.
Her radiant face was revealed-skin glowing like moonlight, eyes burning with divine brilliance. Vansh froze in his tracks, unable to move, staring only at her.
Immediately, Rani Padmavathi quickly lowered the veil back over Manikarnika's face, and the princess entered the temple to complete her prayers. When she returned, Vansh was still seated motionless on his chariot, as if spellbound.
His commander (senapati) asked softly, "Maharaj, what has happened to you?"
Without shifting his gaze, Vansh replied,
Senapati woh ladki kon hai ?"
("Who was that girl, Senapati?")
The commander bowed and said, "Maharaj, she is the princess of Jaisalmer-Rajkumari Manikarnika. Today is her swayamvar."
At those words, fury blazed across Vansh's face. He gripped the reins of his horse and growled, "Rajkumari Manikarnika... she will be mine. She will become the queen of Vansh Chandravanshi-no one else's!"
With that, he spurred his horse forward and galloped away.
Watching him go, the commander murmured anxiously, "O Maa Kali, tune yeh kya kiya , aag aur paani ko mila diya ,ab iss toofan ko aane se koi nahi rok sakta "
Saying this, he led the army behind their king.
("O Maa Kali, what have you done... you've brought fire and water together. Now no one can stop this storm from coming.")
_______________
Manikarnika returned to the palace, where all the princes had already gathered. Rani Padmavathi guided her to the throne, and the radiant princess sat gracefully, her veil lowered.
In the royal court, King Surya Rajvanshi rose and declared, "Let the swayamvar begin! My daughter is not an ordinary girl-she carries the blessings of Mahakal himself. Skilled in every art, she shall choose her groom accordingly." With those words, the swayamvar commenced.
One by one, the princes showcased their strength, skill, and valor before Manikarnika. The grand hall shimmered with anticipation.
Suddenly, a soldier rushed inside, his voice trembling, "Maharaj, the palace is under attack!"
Surya Rajvanshi's expression hardened. "An attack? Who dares such audacity?"
The soldier bowed low. "Maharaj... it is Van..... Vansh Chandravanshi."
A storm of anger flashed in Surya Rajvanshi's eyes. "Why has Vansh attacked here so suddenly?"
Before the king could demand further answers, Vansh himself entered the hall-sword gleaming in his hand, face radiant with a fiery determination. His steps echoed through the chamber, silencing the princes.
"There will be no bloodshed, Surya Rajvanshi," he declared, his voice sharp and commanding. Then, with a piercing smile, he added, "But your daughter-the princess of Jaisalmer-has set fire to my heart. And that fire can only be quenched if she becomes mine."
---
Surya Rajvanshi said, "I will never give my daughter to a demon like you-even if you die for it."
Vansh lifted his chin and replied, "It is you who will die. Along with that, Jaisalmer will also be mine. There has never been anything Vansh Chandravanshi desired and not obtained." Saying this, he raised his sword and began cutting down the princes. His soldiers overpowered the Rajvanshi troops.
Then he strode to where Manikarnika sat, seized her hand, and lifted her onto his horse. He carried her straight to the Kali temple, shouting, "Pandit ji, Vivah ki tayari kariye !"
("Pandit ji, prepare for the wedding!")
Manikarnika wrenched her hand free and pushed back her veil. Her eyes flamed like embers-red and fierce.
Grasping her sword, she said, "Vansh Chandravanshi, tumne hume chukar hume apavitar karne ki koshish ki hai aur hum tumhe jinda nahi chodenge."
("Vansh Chandravanshi, you tried to touch me and defile my honor... and I will not let you live.")
Vansh sneered, "humne socha tha aap Sidhi sadhi si rajkumari hai par aapko gussa bhi aata hai aur yahi gussa hume pasand hai aapki aakhon me yeh gussa yeh aag ."
("I thought you were a simple, innocent princess... but you do get angry-and that anger... I like it. That fire in your eyes... that rage...")
Manikarnika pressed the blade to Vansh's throat and declared, "What did you gain by attacking my kingdom?
If you wanted me, you should have won me honorably at the swayamvar. Instead you attacked my realm, assaulted my honor and my soul. I will not let you live."
"Remember-this Manikarnika will belong only to Vansh Chandravanshi in this life, and in the next life as well." Saying this, Vansh filled her parting with sindoor; Manikarnika's whole face was smeared in the red powder. (Sindoor)
Manikarnika drove her sword into Vansh's chest. The priests and onlookers stood frozen-Manikarnika seemed as though Kali herself had descended. Vansh's face registered a single, tortured cry;
he screamed "hum vada karte hai rajkumari hume aapne humare pran liye hai Lekin agle janam mee hum aapko apna bnakr rhange hum firse milenge baar baar milenge iss kaynat ke khilaf jakar ". Then he died.
("We promise, Rajkumari... you have taken my life today. But in the next birth, I will make you mine. We will meet again-again and again-even if we have to go against the entire universe.")
But Manikarnika's fury was not yet spent. She sank to the ground and wept, sitting beside Vansh's corpse. The priest approached her in disbelief.
Beta yeh kya kiya tumne apne shuhag ki jaan apne haton se hi leli ". The Panditji ask
("What have you done, child? You have taken a life-your shuhag's life-with your own hand.")
Manikarnika sobbed, "This is not about a shuhag . He destroyed my kingdom; he killed my parents; he ruined me." She wept harder.
"Beta vansh chndravnshi maakali ka bakth tha ek baat yaad rakhna iski mirtyu jarur hui lekin sirf sharir se iski atma abhi bhi jeevit hai aur woh agla janam lekar waps aayega" the priest said solemnly,
("Child, Vansh Chandravanshi was a devotee of Maa Kali. Remember one thing-he may have died, but only his body perished. His soul still lives... and it will return in another birth.")
"baba iski iccha mai kabhi puri nhi hone dungi yeh manikarnika Rajvansh ise nhi milegi na iss Janam na agle janam aur yeh mera vada hai Mahakal se ".
("Baba, I will never let her wish come true. She will not get the Manikarnika royal lineage... not in this lifetime, nor in the next. And this is my promise to Mahakal.")
Saying this, she cut her wrist. Where once lay two lifeless bodies, there now lingered an unsettling sign - the hint of something impossible yet destined to happen.
. "O Maa Kali, today you have taken two lives. What will become of them, only you know. They were both your devotees-one a worshipper of Kali, the other bound to Mahakal. Their tale will not end here."
He continued, voice low with the weight of destiny: "They must be born again. Centuries will pass, years will turn-yet this story must be completed."
The temple bells start ringing loudly,
as if they were witnessing everything unfolding before them.
The hall echoed with the priest's final cry: "Jai Maa Kali!"
